Private Lessons
Private lessons are offered in piano, voice, guitar, violin, and drum. The individual instruction allows students to progress at their own pace and gain the best understanding of musical techniques. Students can start private lessons when they are 5 years old. Students can start private lessons any time of the year if there is an opening in the teacher’s schedule. We teach a variety of styles such as pop, jazz, rock and classical. Contact the school office to see which times and days are available.

Exam Preparation
If students wish, they may take optional exams for piano offered at the Royal School of Music (abrsm.org). The Associated Board of Royal School of Music is a national testing board in Nashville. If a student does wish to take an exam, our school can fully prepare them for any level of testing.

Piano
At our school, we start children 5 years old in private piano lessons because at this age they have begun to develop longer attention spans and can retain material easier.

Guitar - Acoustic, Electric and Bass
We recommend for guitar lessons 8 years old as the earliest. Guitar playing requires a fair amount of pressure on the fingertips from pressing on the strings. Children under 8 generally have small hands and may find playing uncomfortable. Bass guitar students generally are 10 years old and older.

Voice
We recommend 10 years old as the youngest age for private vocal lessons. Due to the physical nature of voice lessons (proper breathing techniques, development of the vocal chords and lung capacity), the younger body is generally not yet ready for the rigors of vocal technique. For children younger than 10, we have a preschool music program (ages 3-5) and the Junior Choral Group (ages 6-9) that teaches them how to use their voices properly, in a fun, relaxed environment. In The Performance Company (ages 9 - 15), they use the technique to further their vocal studies.

Violin
We accept violin students from the age of 5. Some teachers will start children as young as 3, but experience has shown us the most productive learning occurs when the beginner is 5 or older.

Drums
The average age of the youngest drum student is 8. This varies greatly depending on the size of the child.

Music Group Classes

Preschool Music Class
The preschool music class teaches the basics of music to children ages 3-5 in a group limited to 8 students. With this class, we start a solid foundation for later success in private music lessons. The students learn to listen and to sing, have fun making music with percussion instruments, learn to recognize orchestral instruments, repeat and create rhythms, and learn to follow melodies. Group classes are 30 minutes once a week.

Junior Musical Theater
Ages 6 - 9. In the Junior Musical Theater class, the students learn intensive warm-ups to improve diction and pitch. They learn the correct posture, the right breathing technique, and vowel formation. As a follow-up to the preschool music class, they continue to follow melodies and will be introduced to harmony, intonation, phrasing, dynamics, and sight-singing. The Junior Musical Theater’s repertoire contains a wide range of musical styles like traditional folk songs, contemporary songs and introduction to musical theater songs.

Senior Musical Theater
Ages 9-15. The Senior Musical Theater class deepens the knowledge the students have learned in the Junior Musical Theater class. The musical styles grow in variety. Show choir moves are added and whole musicals expand the performance experience. The students learn the basics of acting, how to slate in auditions and how to present themselves on stage.

Introduction to Music Theory
The Introduction to Music Theory is a group class for children ages 5-10. This class stands individual or goes together with a music lesson. The student who graduated from our preschool music class can continue the music studies and the student who does not yet feel ready for private lessons can begin to learn about music without pressure. In the introduction to music theory class the students learn in an age-appropriate way note reading, to recognize time signature, keys, rhythms and much more, and are introduced to music history. The class is limited to 8 students and meets for 30 minutes once a week in an 8-week course.

Music Theory Class
This class continues Introduction to Music Theory with greater complexity. However, students ages 11 through adult can start this class as beginners without any prior knowledge of the material. This class introduces the student to the most important concepts of music theory by gaining the knowledge to read and understand music when playing an instrument. For the aspiring songwriter this is the first course to learn how to compose a song.  Furthermore, the class develops a student's ability to recognize, understand, and describe the basic materials and processes of music that are heard or presented in a score. The course is limited to 8 students and meets once a week for 45 minutes in an 8-weeks course.

Song Writing Class
In combination with the Music Theory Course the goal of this course is to learn the basics of the songwriting craft, unfold and develop the talent in each individual student and gain experience in this often collaborative process, including putting songs to music and co-writing with others. The course is limited to 8 students and meets once a week for 45 minutes in an 8-weeks course.

Introduction to Guitar Playing
Ages 8 and up. This class introduces the undecided student to the fundamentals of guitar playing. In a relaxed environment, the students can explore if they have the desire to learn the instrument before committing to a private lesson. The class is limited to 10 students
and meets once a week for 30 minutes in an 8-weeks course
